About Pão de Ló
Pão de Ló is one of the most emblematic cakes in Portuguese convent pastry. Originating from medieval convents, where nuns prepared it with abundant eggs, this cake is distinguished by its incredibly moist texture and delicate flavour. Famous regional variants exist: Ovar's Pão de Ló (moist in the centre), Alfeizerão's and Margaride's. At A Pharmácia da Avó, we prepare our Moist Sponge Cake Minho-style, with farm eggs and a recipe passed from grandmother to granddaughter.
