The bola de Berlim is a round fried dough, coated in sugar and filled with custard cream. It is the undisputed queen of Portuguese beaches — the vendor's call is the official sound of summer. Despite the name, the Portuguese version is distinct from the German Berliner, being more generous with filling. It is an icon of Portuguese beach culture.
